Lidocaine By www.drnumb.com

Lidocaine /li·do·caine/ (li´do-kān) an anesthetic with sedative, analgesic, and cardiac depressant properties, applied topically in the form of the base or hydrochloride salt as a local anesthetic; also used in the latter form as a cardiac antiarrhythmic and to produce infiltration anesthesia and various nerve blocks.

Lidocaine also prescribed for relief of pain from bruises, sprains, breaks, bites, and infection. The medication comes in varying strengths and works by blocking nerve signals. Lidocaine topical cream is usually written in potencies of 2 percent, 2.5 percent, 4 percent and 5 percent, with 5 percent being the longest-lasting.

The medication is written PRN, meaning you use as needed. It is recommended that lidocaine be applied in the smallest dose possible to relieve the pain. It is not recommended to be used over a large area because of the possibility of overdosing. Like other medications, lidocaine is absorbed through the bloodstream, so overdosing is possible.

Apply the medication with the fingertips or cotton swab. If you missed a dose, do not make up for it by doubling the dose. The right thing to do is to go on to the next scheduled dose.

Ideally, lidocaine topical cream can be used three or four times daily, without exceeding eight doses in a 24-hour period. It should not be used for longer than seven days. If overdosing occurs, you could experience difficulty breathing, headache, dizziness and vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately if any of these occur. Check with the prescribing doctor regarding interactions with other medications.

How Often Should Lidocaine Topical Cream Be Reapplied?

Lidocaine topical cream is considered a pain medication. As with all pain medications, exercise care when using it and follow the instructions. Lidocaine is not intended for long-term use, and it’s recommended that treatments end after seven days.
